invited cleopatra and nathaniel pendleton. their 15-year-old daughter hadiya pendleton was killed last month in chicago just about a mile from the president and first lady's chicago home. the first lady also invited police lieutenant brian murphy, who was the first on the scene police officer at the oak creek, wisconsin sikh temple mass shooting in august. lieutenant murphy took 15 bullets to the head, neck, and body when he confronted that well-armed shooter that day. he survived. also seated with the first lady was another sandy hook teacher, kaitlin roig. the first lady has hosted victims of mass shootings at the state of the union before, but in past years that honor, that symbolism never translated to the speech itself. right? to policy. well, that this year in 2013, it changed. >> senators of both parties are working together on tough new laws to prevent anyone from buying guns for resale to criminals. police chiefs are asking our help to get weapons of war and massive ammunition magazines off our streets because these police chiefs, they're tired of seeing their guys and gals be

on the screen left as you look at the picture is hadiya pendleton's mom, the 15-year-old killed by gun violence in chicago. the first lady just attended her funeral, and her name is cleo patrick cowley. she is the guest of the first lady tonight. the president making pretty good time nearing the final term. david gregory, one of the great traditions of this event no, matter who the president is, no matter what you make of it. >> the whole world is watching. not the only ones getting the sense of the state of the union. a lot of people want to know what the state of the united states is. in our business community, in governments around the world. but interesting. here the president is in the house chamber, at a time when the house is controlled by republicans and the stalwart opponents of what the speaker calls a unapologetically liber liber liber liberal agenda. a lot of focus on the house and senate. we were talking about the let congress do its job and stay out of our hair and see what we can do with the president. it's a picture of dysfunction, even if there is a lot of ceremonial handshake

. >> it's gotten a lot more attention with the first lady going to hadiya pendleton's funeral, and now he's heading home. he mentioned in speeches the violence there, but this i think will really bring it home. >>> republican senator marco rubio gave the republican response. amongry public i h rubio scored highest marks when he talked about big government. here is what he said. >> the idea that more taxes and more government spending is the west way to help hard-working middle class taxpayers, that's an old idea that's failed every time it's been tried. more government isn't going to help you get ahead. it's going to hold you back. more government isn't going to create more opportunities. it's going to limit them. and more government isn't going to inspire new ideas, new businesses and new private-sector jobs. it will create uncertainty. >> republican senator rand paul gave the tea party response, chastised both parties for spending too much. here is what he said. >> he's often said there is not enough bipartisanship up here. that's not true. in fact, there's plenty of bipartisanship. bot

by a bullet from a gun. more than 1,000. one of those we lost was a young girl named hadiya pendleton. she was 15 years old. she loved fig newtons and lip gloss. she was a majorette. she was so good to her friends, they all thought they were her best friend. just three weeks ago, she was here, in washington, with her classmates, performing for her country at my inauguration. and a week later, she was shot and killed in a chicago park after school. just a mile away from my house. hadiya's parents, nate and cleo, are in this chamber tonight, along with more than two dozen americans whose lives have been torn apart by gun violence. they deserve a vote. they deserve a vote. [ applause ] they deserve a vote. gabby giffords deserves a vote. the families of newtown deserve a vote. the families of aurora deserve a vote. the families of oak creek and tucson and blacksburg and the countless other communities ripped open by gun violence, they deserve a simple vote. they deserve -- they deserve a simple vote. our actions will not present every senseless act of violence in this country. in fact, no law
